GTA 6: Release date and everything else we know

GTA 6 will be releasing soon, and here's everything to know about the game.

GTA 6 is arguably one of the most awaited games of all time, and Rockstar Games has left no stone unturned in hyping up the upcoming title. Fans are expecting a realistic, massive in-game world and the ability to switch between the two protagonists in real time. Here’s what we currently know about Grand Theft Auto VI, ranging from its release date to all the revealed features.

Editions, release date, price, and platforms

The upcoming Rockstar Games title will release on November 19, 2026. GTA 6 was delayed multiple times, with the May 2026 date having been scrapped by Rockstar because the developer believed the game needed more polish.

Two editions of GTA 6 were announced: Standard and Ultimate. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99 and includes the basic game with no additional items. GTA 6’s Ultimate Edition will cost $99.99 and come with the game and more bonuses, including clothes, vehicles, and in-game goodies. Players who purchase either edition before November 20, 2026, will also receive the Vintage Vice City cosmetic pack. Digital pre-orders of the games will also receive one month of GTA+ free.

The upcoming GTA title has only been announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This leaves out older-generation console owners and PC gamers. While it’s likely that older-generation consoles may not get the game, a delayed PC launch is expected. This won’t be new for Rockstar, and previous GTA and Red Dead Redemption titles have also seen delayed PC launches.

Main characters and return to Vice City

The game has two playable characters, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Jason had an army background, but got into criminal activities following the end of his service. Lucia is jailed after fighting for her family, and this causes her to want to mend her ways. The two characters are partners in crime and also in a relationship. A job the two are involved in goes bad, and the duo ends up getting embroiled further into the criminal underground.

The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, and players will be able to revisit the coastal city from GTA: Vice City. Rockstar was inspired by Miami when it created Vice City, and Leonida is influenced by Florida. Players will likely see many iconic locations from Vice City reimagined here.

Leonida is massive and has several more locations than just Vice City; including Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Leonida Keys, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Ambrosia. The state has islands, coastal cities, and the countryside. GTA 6’s in-game map is reportedly double the size of GTA V, and fans can expect to have many activities that they can find throughout the map.

Gameplay, features, and mechanics

GTA 6 has expanded substantially on previous titles in the series and also takes mechanics from Red Dead Redemption. The end result appears to have more realistic vehicle mechanics, advanced police behavior, and improved NPC interactions. A major change in the game is how the police system works. Law enforcement can identify a criminal using several elements, including CCTV footage, clothes, and weapons.

This means players will have to focus on changing their appearance and getting rid of weapons to avoid being ID’d. The police are also getting a major system that allows them to track you. Police keep information about your clothes, vehicles, and partner. This allows them to track you, and you would have to change these things to avoid being detected. GTA 6 will also introduce a separate profile system, which will track your criminal activities. Unnecessary violence will affect what kind of criminal you are and also how the story unfolds.

Stealing parked vehicles is also changing, as cars can’t be stolen by simply forcing a door open or breaking the window. Vehicles will use different security measures, and you will have to use varying methods to break into one. These include slim jims and key clones. Some vehicles also have trackers, which makes them harder to steal and get away with. Players will also need to manage vehicle health and fuel. This is for everyday use and also for fencing, as the price changes based on a vehicle’s condition. GTA 6 will also change how combat works; players won’t be able to store every weapon they find on their person. You will have to keep weapons in your vehicle and will be limited in how many you can carry.

NPC behavior is also improved, as characters can make different choices in the same situation. Previously, most normal GTA NPCs ran away when you started shooting. GTA 6 NPCs can decide to confront and possibly take you down. The game will allow players to switch between both Lucia and Jason. The story dictates the character during missions, but players can freely switch between both Lucia and Jason outside of missions. There will also be a relationship system for the characters. It will reportedly be four levels, and your actions will dictate whether the relationship is strong or weak.

Online and mods support

The game is currently being marketed as a single-player experience, and it’s unclear when or if an online mode will be released. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy claims that a multiplayer mode could be released as early as 2027. However, Rockstar Games hasn’t officially confirmed anything, so these remain unverified.

GTA 6’s PC version hasn’t been announced yet, which is why it’s unclear what the future of mods will be for the game. Rockstar recently amended its guidelines on mods, with some restrictions placed on modders. These include not being able to mod official characters, storyline, and missions. This may affect GTA 6 mods, but Rockstar hasn’t banned modding its games. So it’s still likely that modders will go into overdrive if GTA 6 is released for PC.
