GTA VI reportedly running at 30fps on consoles

A report from Rockstar North’s preview sessions points to 30fps on consoles, but leaves an important question unanswered about the finished game.

GTA VI’s console builds have reportedly been running at 30 frames per second, with Rockstar yet to commit to a 60fps performance mode.

The detail comes from creator Davy Jones following a visit to Rockstar North. According to VGC’s coverage of his account, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said the console versions were running at 30fps during development. Whether a higher frame rate would be available at launch or introduced later still needed to be checked with the technical team.

For anyone hoping to tear through Vice City at 60fps, that leaves expectations firmly in check. It also leaves some room for clarification: a development build running at 30fps does not, by itself, establish every graphics option the finished game will offer.

What has Rockstar actually said about 30fps?

The comments surfaced in August, rather than through a new performance announcement. They were attributed to Nelson through Jones’ account of the studio visit, with the translated wording specifically referring to the game’s performance during development.

That distinction matters. The report points to 30fps as the current baseline, while leaving the question of a 60fps option unresolved. It does not amount to a promise that a performance mode will arrive in a future update, either.

Push Square’s reporting similarly described GTA VI as targeting 30fps, with Rockstar undecided about a performance mode. Players should therefore be cautious about treating either a launch-day 60fps option or a later upgrade as a certainty.

What about PS5 Pro?

The same reporting has prompted questions about whether PS5 Pro could offer a higher frame rate. Push Square suggested the 30fps target would likely extend to Sony’s more powerful console, although that was its assessment rather than a separately confirmed specification from Rockstar.

For now, there is little reason to base a console upgrade on the assumption that GTA VI will offer 60fps. A clear breakdown of the available modes would give players a much firmer basis for that decision.

GTA VI is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. With release approaching, the outstanding question is exactly which performance options players will find when they load into Leonida.
