Do you need PS Plus to play GTA Online on PS5?
PS Plus, GTA+ and owning GTA 5 cover different things. Here's what you normally need to get into GTA Online on PlayStation.

GTA Online normally requires PlayStation Plus on PS4 and PS5. PS Plus Essential provides online multiplayer, so you do not need Extra or Premium purely to meet that requirement.
You also need access to the game itself. Paying for multiplayer access and owning, or otherwise having a valid entitlement to, GTA Online are separate parts of getting started.
The PS5 game’s PlayStation Store listing states that PS Plus is required for online play. Temporary promotions can change the usual requirement for a limited period, but they should not be mistaken for a permanent change.
Which PS Plus tier do you need?
Essential is sufficient for online multiplayer. Sony’s PS Plus support comparison lists multiplayer as a benefit of Essential, Extra and Premium.
If you own the game and are subscribing solely to play GTA Online, the higher tiers are not an additional entry requirement. Their other benefits may be useful to you, but GTA Online does not require you to upgrade for ordinary multiplayer access.
If your access to the game comes through a subscription catalogue, that entitlement has its own conditions. Do not assume that downgrading a subscription preserves access to a catalogue game simply because Essential still includes multiplayer.
Is GTA+ the same thing as PS Plus?
No. GTA+ is Rockstar’s separate membership programme. Rockstar describes it as optional, with benefits for supported versions of GTA Online.
GTA+ does not replace PlayStation Plus’s multiplayer requirement. Offers can include access to games or other membership benefits, but that should not be confused with Sony’s permission to use paid online multiplayer on PlayStation.
The names make this easier to mix up than it should be. When checking a purchase or subscription, look separately at access to the game, access to PlayStation multiplayer and any optional Rockstar membership.
Do invite-only sessions still need PS Plus?
Yes, under the normal requirement. An invite-only session is still part of GTA Online, even if you enter it alone and never invite another player.
The same principle applies to activities that can be completed solo within Online. Being allowed to do a job without teammates does not convert it into GTA 5’s offline story mode.
If you want to play without the usual PS Plus multiplayer requirement, the relevant distinction is between Story Mode and Online, rather than between a crowded public lobby and a private one.
Does GTA 5’s story mode need PS Plus?
You do not need PS Plus merely to play GTA 5’s single-player story, provided you have the appropriate game entitlement.
Be careful with the standalone GTA Online product on PS5. Online access and Story Mode are different products or components, depending on which edition you obtain. Owning one should not be taken as proof that your purchase includes the other.
Can another account’s PS Plus cover you?
Sony allows selected PS Plus benefits, including online multiplayer, to be shared under its supported console-sharing arrangements. Its official support page explains primary PS4 activation and PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play.
That means every player on an eligible shared console does not necessarily need a separate subscription. The correct console settings and a valid subscription still matter. Simply having a subscribed friend on your friends list does not share the benefit.
What about free multiplayer weekends?
Promotions can temporarily waive the requirement or provide another route to access. Check the specific announcement for dates, platforms and whether the promotion covers multiplayer access, the game download or both.
Those are distinct offers. A free download does not necessarily waive PS Plus, and a free multiplayer period does not necessarily give you a game you do not own.
Sony’s 2022 GTA Online launch announcement is a useful example: it separately described the free PS5 game offer and a time-limited PS Plus trial. Those dates are historical, not a current offer.
The simple check before subscribing
Confirm that your edition includes GTA Online, check whether you already have valid multiplayer access through your own membership or supported console sharing, and only then buy what is missing.
This guide concerns the existing GTA Online service. It should not be used as confirmation of the requirements for any future GTA 6 multiplayer release.
